The JSON format initially started as a more efficient and compact alternative to XML.  With XML’s heavy bloat in closing and ending tags, JSON alternatively features a compact representation of objects and associative arrays.  Additionally, the format had direct translation into JavaScript, so that importing the data for asynchronous web applications (AJAX) was easy.  As web applications grew to use JSON as the primary communication medium, eventually the format has grown ubiquitous enough to even serve as foundation for many NoSQL databases.  MongDB, for instance, stores all data as JSON, and offers native direct interfaces into the databases through JSON syntax.  As the web grows, JSON grows with it, making it one of the most popular data transmission formats of today.
