AJAX technology refers to Asynchronous JavaScript, a technology that enables quick and responsive web applications.  Instead of requiring the interaction to happen on the server, AJAX enables the client to handle the full display and user interface.  This saves time and bandwidth on server commands, and enables much faster response to user inputs.

Prior to AJAX, every time a user clicked on a website, the server needed to render the full page before sending it to the client.  The server would take the URL and parameters, generate a new resulting webpage, and send that back to the client.  AJAX converted what amounted to a two-tier interface into a fully leveraged three-tier system.  The AJAX toolkits let the client act as the front-end, and send requests to the application server, which in turn interacts with the database.

AJAX requests are often formatted as JSON strings.  JSON is an encoding technology that is much more compact than XML and results in more efficient response from the server.  Since JavaScript natively supports decoding JSON, its simple integration is often preferred over the extensive attributed and repetition required by XML.

Most modern applications are programmed with AJAX.  Due to the third layer, complexity of the software is also increased.  However, with an efficient toolkit, a good development company can still produce a top-quality application in comparable time.  Toolkits virtualize much of the programming overhead with the third tier, and enable a database schema to be shared between all layers of the software.
