The PhoneGap platform is a flexible and extensible mobile app development framework, currently provided by Adobe.  Through a suite of libraries that enable targeting both the Android and iPhone platforms, PhoneGap helps to reduce app development costs and simplify deployment.  With a large suite of libraries that integrate native features, PhoneGap applications can handle most of the demands of the individual mobile platforms, while reducing the cost required to develop and deploy a multi-targeted application.

Another feature of PhoneGap is its heavy integration with HTML5.  By developing the mobile application in HTML5, a well-structured application can also often be deployed to the web.  Thus a three part deployment can be made from one codebase – with Android, iOS, and Web versions.  Conditional expressions can enable functionality specific to a particular platform, such as fine-grained GPS location and camera control, while the majority of the business logic and software architecture can be utilized across multiple distributions of the system.

With all its advantages, PhoneGap also does bring a few drawbacks to development.  Apps targeted toward a specific platform, such as Android, can better handle themes and automatic adjustment to screen sizes.  While iOS applications are generally limited in scope to a small subset of devices, Android platforms target a plethora of different screen sizes and resolutions.  Although responsive applications can adapt to different screen sizes, they often sacrifice some extent of the designer's freedom in animation and creativity.
