There are two general kinds of server software – completely custom applications, and applications built using an existing platforms.  Platforms range from general software platforms, such as Microsoft Access, SharePoint, and Oracle for Applications, to business-specific software such as MAS90 for manufacturers, or Sage or Intuit for the accounting department.  Depending on the application, an existing platform might offer enough overlapping functionality that its cost would justify the purchase, or a fully custom server software might be a better fit.

In addition to the software itself, it’s important that the IT infrastructure will support the application.  Windows applications often need Windows Professional clients, so that the computers will support the file sharing and domain access that is essential for many software packages.  Fully web based programs, on the other hand, can offer less of a reliance on the platforms themselves, however often have a drawback of decreased productivity, if they do not have a native connector.

In maintaining existing server software, a variety of tools can be used to diagnose and troubleshoot problems.  Low-level packet loggers, process diagnostics, and integrated OS logging can all help to trace and solve a problem.  Alternatively, virtual machine technology can also help extend the life of older software, by enabling newer hardware and operating system versions to host older applications.  While these solutions may not be ideal, they often serve as an interim solution until a longer-term application can be developed.
